Dr John Perera

Dr. John Perera is a highly experienced psychiatrist with over 17 years of expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of mental health disorders. His areas of specialisation include addictions, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD and psychiatry of old age. 

Dr Perera holds the Certificate of Advanced Training in Consultation‑Liaison Psychiatry (Cert. Cons Liaison Psych.) and has a strong clinical interest and specialised expertise in this subspecialty, which focuses on the interplay between physical illness and mental health. He has worked closely with medical and surgical teams, including the Acquired Brain Injury Unit in Townsville and the Chronic Pain Team, delivering integrated psychiatric care for patients with complex needs.

Deeply engaged in the treatment of somatic disorders, such as functional neurological disorders and neuropsychiatry, Dr. Perera adopts a holistic approach to patient care. He emphasizes the importance of integrating psychotherapy and lifestyle modifications alongside traditional medical treatments. Additionally, Dr. Perera is actively involved in a military and veterans peer group and conducts DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs) assessments for veterans.

Dr. Perera completed his medical degree at North Colombo Medical College in Sri Lanka and pursued his psychiatric training in Queensland, Australia, where he achieved his fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). Throughout his career, Dr. Perera has served in major public hospitals across Queensland, including The Townsville Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital, and Logan Hospital (Metro South).

Before his medical career, Dr. Perera explored the field of law, studying up to his final year in law college. He is an avid reader with a keen interest in philosophy. Dr. Perera resides on the Gold Coast with his wife and daughter, and enjoys walking his Cavoodle, Zuko.
