DVA Services at Currumbin Clinic

Currumbin Clinic is proud to offer a range of specialised services tailored for Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) patients. As a Tier 1 provider, we have achieved DVA’s highest level of recognition, ensuring veterans receive priority access to quality mental health services designed to address their unique challenges.

As part of this esteemed relationship, we provide a variety of psychiatric services to eligible veterans and war widows, including:

  • Pre-admission and discharge planning support
  • Assistance in the coordination and streamlining of care
  • Referrals to appropriate services and resources
  • Coordination of DVA client visits and information services in collaboration with ex-service organisations
  • Acting as a single point of contact for DVA patients, their families, carers, ex-service organisations, and the DVA, particularly regarding the resolution of concerns and problems
  • General health and lifestyle education, and counselling

Inpatient Program 

Our veteran-focused program is meticulously designed to address the diverse mental health needs of veterans, including conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and dual diagnosis. This comprehensive program offers a holistic approach to mental health care, ensuring that each veteran receives personalized and effective treatment.

Day Programs

Currumbin Clinic provides comprehensive and intensive DVA Approved treatment programs for a wide range of mental health concerns. An experienced team of mental health professionals facilitate our programs, and patient attendance is under the care of their admitting Psychiatrist.

Addictions First Steps

This program is designed for individuals who are early in their journey of sobriety, need a review of the fundamental skills used in addictions recovery or have had a recent lapse/relapse. It aims to assist patients diagnosed with both substance use and other mental health disorders to better manage their moods and change addictive behaviours. The program combines evidence based interventions such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), relapse prevention and motivational enhancement. Each session offers group educational sessions and practice of key strategies and skills with a focus on mood management, relapse prevention, life skills and building supports

Addictions Recovery

This program is developed for individuals who are further along in their addictions recovery journey. They have completed the Addictions First Steps program, and have an ongoing commitment to sobriety. The program takes more of a fluid, psychodynamic approach, with elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The morning session is dedicated to exploring issues that have arisen during the week, while the afternoon session focuses on the skills needed to maintain recovery and lessen relapse. 

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

This program is designed for individuals who struggle with intense emotions and associated impulsivity. Entering this program, participants may report struggling in their relationships and having an unstable sense of self. This program is helpful for individuals who have a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, but is not a prerequisite. This program is also helpful for individuals who engage in suicidal and non-suicidal self-harming behaviours, addictions and other forms of coping that may not be sustainable of healthy in the long term. The program includes the 4 modules of DBT: Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. 

Dealing with Distress

This is 12 week introductory Dialectical and Behavioural Therapy group therapy program. This is a great program to introduce the concept of DBT and build a foundation of the key principals and skills taught in this modality. Some individuals prefer to do Dealing with Distress to get a taste of DBT prior to entering the 6 month program. Whereas, others don’t feel like they need the intensity of a 6 month program, but need to skills of DBT. The program includes the 4 modules of DBT: Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation.

Managing Adult ADHD

This program is designed for people who are struggling to manage their ADHD symptoms, such as attention and motivation difficulties. The program also addresses the psychological impact of ADHD on people, such as intense emotions and unhelpful patterns of thinking which may be negatively impacting their day-to-day lives. It promotes healthy living and aims to help patients integrate aspects of both psychological and physical recovery. The program is based on basic CBT principles applied specifically to the difficulties associated with ADHD and aims to assist individuals with ADHD to build resilience.

Veterans and Emergency Services: Effective Communication and Mastering Anger

This is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based program that addresses problems that arise from serving in high stress occupations, such as stress and arousal management, anger management, and communication and relationship skills. Understanding the Military experience, this program is trauma informed. It also provides a safe, confidential and supportive environment to complement individual treatment pathways.

Veterans and Emergency Services: Masterclass

This is an open group, which is designed to be a follow up program for individuals who have completed the 12 week Effective Communication and Mastering Anger Program. This longer term program covers a broad range of topics based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. As an example, sessions include managing mood and anxiety symptoms, understanding emotions, addiction, sleep and more. The program is delivered with a trauma-informed approach, understanding the background of the individuals who in the room. 

Admission Information

Veteran accounts and entitlements

If you're an eligible veteran or war widow, you won't have any personal expenses for treatment at Currumbin Clinic and you won't receive an account.

You will, however, be charged for pharmacy and personal items not related to your admission diagnosis.

Types of accommodation

Accommodation consists of both private rooms with an ensuite bathroom, and twin share rooms with an ensuite bathroom. Naturally you will share a room with a person of the same gender.

Transport to and from hospital

Some veteran patients are eligible to have transport arranged for them through the DVA.

Patients can pre-arrange transport vouchers with their General Practitioner prior to their admission to cover their journey to and from Hospital.

Alternatively, please speak to hospital staff when organising your discharge. They will assist with your discharge transport arrangements.
