Professional background
Dr Peter Vidgen (GMBBS) was born and bred in Toowoomba but spent many of his formative years on the Gold Coast mainly with Surf Life Saving Clubs Pacific, Currumbin and Surfers Paradise. Dr Vidgen completed his Medical Degree at the University of Queensland in 1970 and following this, worked at the Princess Alexander Hospital as a Resident then Medical Registrar.
In 1976 as a General Practitioner, he opened his Medical Practice in Palm Beach. Shortly after this he also worked as a Visiting Medical Officer with Gold Coast Integrated Mental Health Services, and as Consultation-Liaison Specialist for older persons mental health with Queensland Health whilst continuing his General Practice. For 12 years, he also managed the majority of the southern Gold Coast's patients on Schizophrenia-related medication.
Dr Vidgen was also Chairman of the GP Society of the Gold Coast, today known as the Primary Health Network (PHN) and formerly Medical Local. For ten years, he was the lead GP for mental health for the Gold Coast Division and was also Chairperson of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of the Gold Coast (now the Mental Illness Fellowship). Since 1999, Dr Vidgen has managed the medical services for Currumbin Clinic, along with several other very capable Medical Practitioners.
He is proud to be associated with what he believes is one of the most comprehensive medical services to be offered in any mental health hospital in Australia.
